Icehotel

Two hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, the village of Jukkasjärvi sits on the Torne River. Every winter since 1989, ice from that river has been cut, stored and turned into a hotel.
Artists apply each year to design the art suites. So no two seasons look alike. Beds are blocks of ice laid with reindeer hides and expedition sleeping bags, and room temperature holds a few degrees below zero.
In spring the building melts back into the river. Icehotel 365, opened in 2016, keeps a smaller set of ice suites and a bar frozen all year using solar-powered cooling. Warm rooms, a restaurant and guided trips into the snow complete the stay.
